SASH WINDOW RESTORATION
Particularly in areas of conservation, period properties often have the original Georgian style sash windows, these can be over a hundred years old and have survived owing to the quality of the timber used and the care and skill put into their original manufacture. Replacing sash windows can be very expensive, especially in hardwood and often don't have the character of the original timber window.
The rebuilding and repair of the original timber sash window can be the right, and cost effective option. This can include re-glazing, replacement of rotten /damaged timber, glazing bars & sills etc.. (usually in hardwood). Once the timber windows are repaired and restoration has taken place, they are stripped down, treated, primed, under-coated, and finished in a traditional colour of your choice.

The "Repair Care" System explained...
"The conservation of sliding sash and casement windows in listed & period buildings - The alternative joinery repair system, a cost effective complete solution."
Lower Cost Alternative
Modern softwoods are fast grown and kiln dried hence have a higher moisture content than old and traditionally seasoned timber. This can lead to premature failure of the timber as once painted the moisture is locked in. Rot can destroy the wood after a few years and often remains undetected as the timber decays from the inside out. The cost of replacement can be prohibitive especially if more than one window is effected.
The "Repair Care System" gets round these issues and provides a quality, durable and long lasting repair.
Older Properties
In older property which retains possibly the original or early replacement windows, the quality of the timber is generally excellent. However, after around 100 years or so, it isn't too much to expect a certain amount of softening or decay to be present, although this is generally localised. This system is at its best on these type of repairs as replacement will usually mean an inferior quality window, unless hardwood is specified at about 3 times the cost.
Retains Original Character
The character of the original will also often be sacrificed, and it may be that planning consent for replacement isn't given due to the nature of the property and its situation within a conservation area. This system isn't only good for the restoration of casements and frames, but can be used to rebuild glazing bars and even repairs where the timber has rotted through. In addition the Dry Seal glazing sealant has a fast curing time and is ready for over painting next day, this eliminates the slow curing of conventional putty giving a faster turn round.
